There are four categories of membership in the Association: Founding Member, Regular Member, Student Member and Practitioner Member.

Founding Members are those individuals who initially created KERA as an Association, of whom 8 are from Nazarbayev University and 12 from other institutions. These Founding Members have no special rights beyond those of Regular Members, but are allowed to use the title of Founding Member.

Regular Members are those individuals who are active educational researchers, typically employed in universities, pedagogical institutions, research centres, etc.  Regular membership presupposes an on-going and active research agenda.

Student Members are typically postgraduate students in Education or a relevant field who are planning a career as educational researchers, and for whom Regular membership is an ultimate goal. Student Members are allowed to participate fully in all Association activities, but may not vote in Association elections.

Practitioner Members are individuals who are teachers, administrators, and others working in the educational field. Association encourages individuals interested in the application of educational research to become Practitioner Members. Practitioner Members are allowed to participate fully in all Association activities, but may not vote in Association elections.
